NetIAS Debates: Workshop Sovereign AI and Epistemic Justice: Reclaiming Sustainable Computation”

The NETIAS Debates Series: Sovereign AI and Epistemic Justice – Reclaiming Sustainable Computation brought together researchers, policymakers, and practitioners to discuss the future of Artificial Intelligence through the lenses of sustainability, digital sovereignty, and epistemic justice. Hosted by the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study in Stellenbosch, South Africa, the event was organised in collaboration with the Aarhus Institute for Advanced StudiesHamburg Institute for Advanced StudyACTS AI Institute, DIGITAfrica, and the University of Ngaoundéré. The programme explored how AI can be developed through sustainable, inclusive, and locally governed approaches that empower communities and foster equitable digital innovation.

DIGITAfrica actively contributed to the organisation of the event and was represented by project partner University of Ngaoundéré, which co-organised the debate series. The event provided an excellent opportunity to present the project’s vision, objectives, and ongoing activities, highlighting DIGITAfrica’s commitment to building sustainable digital research infrastructures and strengthening research and innovation collaboration between Africa and Europe.

By engaging in discussions on sovereign AI, sustainable computation, and inclusive digital innovation, DIGITAfrica strengthened its visibility within the international research community while fostering new opportunities for collaboration with researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders working towards more equitable and environmentally responsible AI ecosystems.
