Blueprint

The DIGITAfrica Blueprint is a pioneering initiative to create a pan-African research infrastructure that bridges continents and enables groundbreaking collaboration in digital sciences. To achieve this vision, it addresses the key challenges facing Africa’s networking landscape today:

Connectivity Gaps

More than 600 million people still lack reliable internet access, and rural and peri-urban regions remain dependent on fragmented 2G and 3G networks.

Technology fragmentation

There is no one-size-fits-all solution—fibre, 4G/5G, satellite, mesh networks, and community radio all play complementary roles.

Power & Sustainability

Frequent power outages; solar-dependent sites; solutions must run without constant operator intervention.

Skill
Shortages

Limited local expertise to deploy and maintain complex infrastructure; solutions must include blueprints that enable hands-on learning.

What Is the DIGITAfrica Blueprint?

The DIGITAfrica Blueprint is a pioneering initiative to create a pan-African research infrastructure that bridges continents and enables groundbreaking collaboration in digital sciences.

Designed in collaboration with African and European stakeholders, the Blueprint provides a modular, open-source reference architecture that any African research institution can adopt, adapt, and deploy at its own pace and within its own resource constraints. It offers a practical, step-by-step framework for strengthening research capabilities, digital infrastructure, and skills development to support Africa’s digital transformation.

The Blueprint is not a product to buy—it is a community-owned specification for building sovereign, sustainable, and interoperable digital infrastructure.
